Highland Drive/1100 East project construction to begin later this month, public information open house Feb. 2

February 1, 2023

Salt Lake City’s Highland Drive/1100 East reconstruction is slated to begin in late February. The multi-faceted effort will make for a more walkable, bikeable, and transit-oriented neighborhood, and the public is encouraged to attend an informational open house on Thursday, Feb. 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Forest Dale Golf Course.

During construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane southbound between Wilmington Ave. and 2700 South. Northbound traffic will be diverted to1300 East and 900 East at Wilmington Ave. and 2700 South. This traffic configuration is expected to be in place through the end of 2023 and will expand north to 2100 South as work progresses. Phase 2 (from 2100 South to Logan Ave.) is planned for construction in 2024.

“Businesses are open during construction. We need you to keep visiting and supporting all the places you love throughout construction,” said Sugar House Chamber of Commerce Co-Chair Erika Wiggins. “We’ve created the #ShopSugarHouse campaign, where people visit Sugar House businesses they love and win prizes by tagging the Sugar House Chamber on social media.”

Part of Salt Lake City’s “Funding Our Future” bond passed by voters in 2018, the project will replace and upgrade sewer, water, and storm drain infrastructure, rebuild the full depth of the roadway, add a new multi-use path on the west side of the road, bike lanes throughout, and enhance the Sugar House character with additional landscaping.

“Our goal is to make Sugar House a more comfortable place for people to be,” said Salt Lake City Transportation Planner Lynn Jacobs.

In addition to replacing the aging roadway, the project will replace and upgrade sewer, water and storm drain infrastructure and add widened sidewalks, a multi-use path, bike lanes and complete the final gap in the Parley’s Trail system in Salt Lake City.

“We know people are coming to Sugar House because it is a nice place to be. There are great businesses, beautiful trees and it is a destination for a lot of people. This project is designed to enhance what makes the area great and make it more comfortable to get around without a car – by walking, biking, transit or even ride-sharing,” Jacobs said.
