After two decades of intensive use, Salt Lake City plans to replace the Rotary Play Park Playground for Children of All Abilities at Liberty Park using funding from the 2022 voter-approved Reimagine Neighborhood Parks General Obligation Bond.

The public can provide input on the concept designs by taking a survey now through May 31 or meet project representatives in person at the playground from 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 17, and Friday, May 24, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 25.

Last year, Salt Lake City gathered feedback from playground and park visitors, neighbors, and other stakeholders through in-person activities at the park and an online survey that received hundreds of responses. From this engagement, the project team learned which features and amenities people thought were most important in the new playground.

“Many people want to see a playground accessible for children of all ages and abilities, which we love because it supports the history of the playground built to commemorate the 2002 Special Olympics,” said Salt Lake City Project Manager Ronnie Pessetto.

Playground features that encourage exploration through imaginative play and obstacle courses were high on the preference survey, along with natural materials and play experiences, shade structures, an updated splash pad, drinking fountains, improved sightlines, and other safety features.

With this feedback and the project goals in mind, the City and its consultant team have developed three concepts with distinct themes. Public input via this survey and in-person activities will help the team develop a final design, which is anticipated to be finalized in July and shared at the Special Olympics Inclusion Festival on July 18 at Liberty Park. Construction would follow in the summer of 2025.
