Neighbors,
I wanted to take a moment to update you on an important issue. As you might have heard, the Jordan River Parkway Trail is closed from Cottonwood Park to 700 North. This is a direct response to ongoing public safety concerns that have been unsuccessfully addressed through any other means. The closure will also address the relocation of the trail behind Backman Elementary to improve visibility and safety.
I know that closing public spaces is never the ideal course for addressing problems, but the situation has escalated to a point where this adjustment will best serve the safety of all people—sheltered and unsheltered.
The city will reopen the trail as soon as possible after several months. Pedestrians and bicyclists can take 500 N, 1400 W and 800 N as alternate routes. View the closure and detour map.
Thank you for your patience while we work through the dueling crises of homelessness and criminality—both of which deserve our full attention and effort.
I am available to meet, talk, or communicate electronically. I am hopeful for the future of our neighborhood and our ability to share public spaces in a healthy and sustainable way thanks to these difficult but necessary decisions.
View the press release for more details.
Thank you again for your patience.
-Victoria
