During this year’s 45-day session, the Utah Legislature passed 582 bills. Many of them will directly impact Salt Lake City.
We have a team dedicated to reviewing state and federal laws to see how they affect our community. They also build relationships and advocate for legislation that helps Salt Lake City. Read the Utah Legislature Synopsis of the Legislative Affairs team’s work this session. You can also watch their post-session presentation to the City Council.
Several bills include:
HB465 – Requires the city to sign an interagency agreement with the Utah Department of Public Safety to enhance public safety. It also allows the State to use eminent domain to build a new homeless shelter on unincorporated land.
HB77 – Bans the display of “unofficial” flags on government property. This means the LGBTQ+ pride flag and Juneteenth flag would not be allowed.
HB267 – Prohibits Salt Lake City from engaging in collective bargaining with public sector labor unions. A group is currently collecting signatures for a referendum that could repeal the bill.
SB195 – Requires Salt Lake City to develop a mobility plan and submit to UDOT for approval. It also prohibits SLC from proceeding on transportation projects unless they are included in the approved mobility plan.
The City Council is dedicated to Salt Lake City residents and will continue to advocate for you.
