Signals Team

Salt Lake City’s Traffic Signals Team, part of the Streets Division, maintains and operates about 250 traffic signals and crossings across the city. They also manage more than 180 other signal devices, including:

  • 80 school zone flashers
  • 50 pedestrian-activated flashers
  • 50 radar speed signs
  • Various illuminated signs

Each year, the team handles over 2,200 utility marking requests (Bluestakes) to keep construction and excavation safe. They also help design, review, and inspect new traffic signal projects.

24/7 support

Streets’ signal technicians are available around the clock to fix dark or malfunctioning signals, keeping drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders safe. During regular business hours, Streets aims to respond within 30 minutes—and since 2018, our average response time has been just under 20 minutes. After hours, one technician is always on standby.

Proactive maintenance

Every traffic signal in the city is inspected at least five times a year through our Preventative Maintenance Inspection (PMI) program. Inspections include:

  • Testing for malfunctions
  • Replacing LED signal heads
  • Checking signal poles and cabinets
  • Inspecting traffic detection devices
  • Reviewing signal operations
  • Inspecting pedestrian signals

This proactive work helps traffic signals last longer and keeps them working reliably for everyone.
