Types of private construction
Private projects in the public right of way may include:
- Fiber and telecom installation
- Gas or electric utility upgrades
- Private development requiring lane or sidewalk closures
- Temporary work zones related to building construction
Fiber projects
Internet companies install fiber cables along public streets and sidewalks to expand high-speed internet access. Work often includes drilling small holes in park strips between sidewalks and streets or along the edge of the roadway. Installation on a given block is typically short in duration, but crews may move block by block over time.

How the City is involved
Private development projects may require temporary use of the public right of way for construction activities. These projects are associated with private building construction and are managed by the developer or their contractor, not the City.
Salt Lake City reviews and permits private work in the public right of way to help ensure:
- Safe travel for people walking, biking, driving, and using transit
- Coordination between projects
- Restoration of streets and sidewalks after work is complete
