Four-Week Restroom Attendant Pilot Program

Four-Week Restroom Attendant Pilot Program

The Salt Lake City Department of Public Lands is exploring a new approach to help keep park restrooms safe, welcoming, and accessible to everyone.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, an attendant will be present at the restrooms near Rotary Play Park in Liberty Park, 600 Harvey Milk Blvd., for a four-week pilot program. The attendant will help ensure the facilities are used for their intended purpose and remain safe and available for park visitors.

Public restrooms are an essential part of making parks welcoming and accessible. However, vandalism and situations in which people occupy restrooms for extended periods of time can prevent others from using these facilities as intended.

With the reopening of the Rotary Play Park, many families and children are expected to visit Liberty Park, and having safe, accessible restrooms is an important part of making sure everyone can enjoy the space.

At the end of the four-week pilot, Public Lands will evaluate what they learned and consider what approaches may help keep the restrooms open and available to the public over the long term.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Public Lands introducing a restroom attendant?

Parks in Salt Lake City have experienced issues with restroom vandalism and facilities being occupied for extended periods of time, limiting access for other visitors. The attendant will help monitor restroom use and support a safer, more welcoming environment for everyone.

Why were these restrooms selected?

The restrooms near Rotary Play Park were recently renovated as part of the playground improvements. With more families expected to visit the renewed play space, Public Lands wants to help ensure the safety of the restrooms.

Is Public Lands considering hiring a full-time attendant?

No full-time position is planned at this time. The ongoing cost of dedicated attendants makes this approach difficult to sustain. The pilot is intended to help Public Lands evaluate the need and explore practical, long-term solutions.

What are the restroom guidelines?
