Main Street Crosswalks

Responsive Margin

Overview

Salt Lake City is working to improve safety for people using crosswalks without traffic signals along Main Street between 900 South and 2100 South. Community feedback from the Main Street Corridor Vision Plan identified these uncontrolled crosswalks as a top safety concern. While full reconstruction of the street is part of the long-term vision, we’re taking steps now to make crossing the street safer.

People walking and biking across a wide, marked crosswalk on Main Street in Salt Lake City, with houses, trees, and parked cars in the background on a sunny day.

What’s Planned

We’re planning to upgrade at least five crosswalks with semi-permanent safety features. These include:

  • Pinned-on concrete islands

  • High-visibility signage

  • Quick-build materials like bollards and potted plants

These improvements will help test out the future design ideas from the Vision Plan and make crossings safer in the short term.

Priority Crosswalk Locations

We’re focusing on these locations first:

  • Fayette Avenue

  • Herbert Avenue

  • Fremont Avenue / Harvard Avenue

  • Van Buren Avenue / Bryan Avenue

  • Coatsville Avenue

  • Layton Avenue

While we don’t have the budget to upgrade every crossing along the corridor right now, we want to make sure these locations reflect what the community wants and needs.

Budget & Timeline

Funding: $1 million in Capital Improvement Program (CIP) funds.

Construction Timeline: Work is planned to begin in 2025.
