Main Street Crosswalks

Responsive Margin

Overview

Salt Lake City is working to improve safety at crosswalks without traffic signals on Main Street between 900 South and 2100 South. Community feedback from the Main Street Corridor Vision Plan highlighted these crossings as a top concern.

While a full street redesign is part of the long-term plan, we’re making short-term safety improvements now.

What’s planned

We’re planning to upgrade at least five crosswalks with semi-permanent safety features. These include:

  • Pinned-on concrete islands

  • High-visibility signage

  • Quick-build materials like bollards and potted plants

These improvements will help test out the future design ideas from the Vision Plan and make crossings safer in the short term.

SURVEY RESULTS ARE IN!

The Main Street Crosswalk Improvements survey was open from May 5th to July 20th. Below are the results of the survey which will inform the types and locations of improvements. Draft plans will be made public when available.

Chart displaying votes of Safety Issues at Unsignalized Crossings

Vehicle speeds, long crossing distances, street lighting, and unpredictable driver behavior were noted as the top crossing safety issues at unsignalized intersections. Respondents could select up to three issues.

Chart displaying votes of Preferred Crossing Improvements

Concrete curb extensions and median islands were the top-voted treatments, along with crosswalk markings and flashing crosswalk signs, or RRFBs. Respondents could select up to three improvements.

Chart displaying votes of Improvement Locations

Several locations ranked highly for improvements, with the top location being Fremont/Harvard Ave. This location, along with several other highly ranked options are on a Safe Route to School and/or align with a crossing on State Street. Respondents could select up to five locations. For a visualization of votes, see the map below:

Finally, respondents were asked to choose between the intensity of improvement investment and number of locations.

Chart displaying votes on project approach

It’s no surprise that “somewhere in between” was the popular choice. We can’t upgrade every crossing right now, but your input will help us focus on the locations and improvements that matter most to the community.

We’ll also be sharing updates at Ballpark Community Council meetings.

Budget and timeline

Funding: $1 million in Capital Improvement Program (CIP) funds.

Construction Timeline: Work is planned to begin in late 2025/early 2026.
