Free metered parking for green vehicles

Green vehicles are eligible for a parking permit that allows free parking at Salt Lake City parking meters for up to the maximum time allowed for each parking space (SLC ordinance 12.56.205).

Qualifying vehicles

Each year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) updates its SmartWay Vehicle standards to recognize the cleanest and most efficient vehicles. Salt Lake City Green Vehicles are those that meet the current SmartWay Elite criteria, ensuring the free parking incentive is reserved for the best environmental performers.

As standards have become stricter, only fully electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles now qualify.

The EPA regularly updates its SmartWay Elite criteria to ensure it continues recognizing the most efficient vehicles. Currently, only fully electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles meet these requirements.

The permit is only valid at Salt Lake City parking meters.

Do motorcycles qualify for the program?

Yes, but only motorcycles that are 100% electric.

Can I park for free at city meters with a disability placard?

If you have a valid disability license plate or placard (from the Utah DMV) and are transporting a person with a disability, you can park for free at any city meter for up to two hours.
