Hiring Process
Working with SLC Corp Human Resources, we have identified the following process for hiring Teen Interns this summer:
- Using the submission form, Division Directors will draft a brief internship overview outlining the summer work projects. Completed internship overviews will be sent to YCE staff via email.
- Throughout April and May, YCE staff will visit Salt Lake City School District high schools to pitch the summer internship opportunity to teens.
- YCE staff will work with HR to create and post the YouthCity Summer Internship position on Workday and the city job board.
- Interested teens apply for the YouthCity Summer Internship job posting on Workday.
- YCE staff will interview teens, decide if they are a good candidate, and match them to an open Internship opportunity.
- HR will work with each participating division to create a copy of the YouthCity Summer Internship position for each department in Workday. These positions will be created but will not be posted on the city job board and will remain empty until a teen is identified/hired/assigned to the host division.
- YCE staff will update HR with the names of teens selected and the city divisions they are assigned to for this summer.
- HR staff will move the teen applicants from the Youth & Family job posting to an empty posting for the host division.
- Teens will then be hired directly by the host division and department. The host division will process all timecards and pay the teens directly from their division budgets.
- YCE staff will teach Teen Interns how to use Workday to clock in and clock out during the orientation training.
- At the end of the summer, the host divisions will terminate teen Interns in Workday.

Summer Teen Internship FAQs
Can YouthCity Employment Summer Teen Interns operate city vehicles or ride in city vehicles?
- Teen Interns are allowed to ride in city vehicles being driven by an approved Salt Lake City staff member.
- Teen Interns are NOT approved to operate any city vehicles as Salt Lake City Corp requires all drivers to be 21 years old and maintain a clean motor vehicle record.
- Teen Interns are responsible for providing and/or arranging for their own transportation to and from their assigned workplace.
- Should the host division require Interns to work outside of their assigned location, the host division needs to arrange transportation to and from the work locations.
- Teen Interns MAY NOT ride in or drive personal vehicles of city employees. Should a Teen Intern need to be transported, the host division will need to ensure the teen rides in a city vehicle.
Can YouthCity Employment Summer Teen Internship be terminated?
Yes, Teen Interns are Salt Lake City employees and are expected to follow tasks outlined on the job description and follow city policies. For many teens, this internship will be their first formal work opportunity, and we aim to provide a safe yet realistic learning experience. YCE staff will engage with host divisions to provide each teen with the support they need to be successful. With that, should a Teen Intern be unable to complete the responsibilities of the position, they will be excused from the internship, and their employment will be terminated. We invite all host divisions to work with the YouthCity Employment staff to provide each teen with the support and guidance that is needed.
Can YouthCity Employment Summer Teen Intern take time-off?
Yes, Teen Interns are Salt Lake City employees working hourly part-time jobs. Therefore, they do not qualify for any paid time off or city benefits. During the screening and hiring process we will inquire about their ability to work the full 6-week or 8-week internship. It is our expectation that teens take no more than TWO days off throughout the internship and should work directly with their host division mentor to gain approval. They will also be instructed to update their host mentors in a timely manner should they call out sick.
What are professional boundaries for adults working with minors?
Teen Interns between the ages of 16-17 years old are minors and should not be alone with adult staff behind closed doors, in personal cars, and/or engage in events or activities with city staff outside of the workspace. Whenever possible, it is suggested that teens are not paired 1×1 with adult staff and that a third teen or staff should be present. Salt Lake City staff should refrain from engaging in dating and or pursuing any romantic connections with teen interns. Eighteen-year-olds that are hired would be considered adults new to the workforce. Some divisions may require all interns to be at least 18 years old to comply with workplace safety standards. Please indicate the preferred age ranges on the attached Internship Description Form. Upon hire and before the internship begins, host divisions will be informed of the age of their assigned interns to ensure all safety standards are met.
