WHEREAS, communities across the United States observe a week of action to stop hate in response to a rise in expressions of hate and intolerance; and
WHEREAS, in recent years, Utah has seen an increase in hate crimes directed at the LGBTQ community and others based on race, ethnicity, and religion; and
WHEREAS, United Against Hate Week affirms values of safety and belonging for all; and
WHEREAS, the week-long observance provides communities with support and resources to respond to and prevent hate and build inclusion and equity; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City Police Department is committed to taking immediate action upon learning of possible hate crimes and those who believe they’ve been a victim of a hate crime can contact 801-799-3000 or 9-1-1 in an in-progress or life-threatening emergency to report it or speak to a victim advocate; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City is committed to ongoing work to build trust with all communities and create effective avenues for the intervention and prevention of hate incidents and hate crimes; and
WHEREAS, it requires intentional effort from each individual to cultivate inclusive and compassionate environments in every corner of the city, in every neighborhood, and every city department to increase understanding and empathy; and
WHEREAS, when we work together against hate, we can restore respect and civil discourse and embrace the strength of diversity to build a more inclusive city.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erin Mendenhall, Mayor of Salt Lake City, proclaim September 21-27, 2024, as:
