Missing Middle Housing and Deciphering Density in SLC 

Salt Lake City invites public to learn about missing middle housing

The Salt Lake City Planning Division is inviting residents on a walking tour of the Avenues Neighborhood to look at different examples of what has been coined as “missing middle housing.” The tour is the first of several events in the second annual Summer Planning Series. 

Missing middle housing is multi-family housing forms that are compatible in size and scale with single-family homes. Examples include duplexes, fourplexes, townhouses, and cottage homes where there are several small homes on the same lot.The Avenues is home to several different types of missing middle housing and there are many other examples throughout Salt Lake City’s neighborhoods. 

The Summer Planning Series is an opportunity for residents to learn about how the city works to guide new development. Participants in the “Summer Planning Series” will also find out about how to get involved in planning their neighborhood, available city programs and resources, and walkability – a measure of how friendly a place is for walking. The Summer Planning Series was recognized by City Weekly as a Best of Utahwinner as the “best way to get to know Salt Lake’s history.” The first 2019 tour will focus specifically on the different missing middle housing types, why they are considered “missing,” and what housing density really means.
