The Waste and Recycling Division of Salt Lake City is making the first citywide change to its curbside collection schedule in more than three decades.

Starting the week of February 3, the City’s collection trucks will switch some weekly pickup days to effectively shift days for neighborhoods with the heaviest workloads to occur in the middle of the week when the City’s equipment and workforce resources are the most robust.

“When it comes to essential services like waste and recycling, we know that residents value reliability and efficiency above all else,” said Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall. “This new schedule will directly lead to more consistency in service and fewer disruptions due to inclement weather or unexpected events, making it a no-brainer for our City.”

All residents who currently have their waste, recycling, and yard waste containers serviced by the Waste and Recycling Division are being notified by direct mail and container tags.

Residents with Monday pickup will switch to Tuesdays.

Residents with Tuesday pickup will switch to Mondays.

Residents with Wednesday pickup will switch to Fridays.

Residents with Thursday pickup will experience no change.

Residents with Friday pickup will switch to Wednesdays.

The schedule change does not affect apartment and condominium buildings with private dumpsters, businesses with private dumpsters, and Call-2-Haul availability and pick-up. Some residents participating in optional curbside glass recycling services will be notified separately of new monthly pickup days by third-party service provider Momentum Recycling.

“While Salt Lake City has experienced an overall growth trend over the past 30 years, not all areas of the City have grown at the same rate,” said Chris Bell, Waste and Recycling Division Director. “These uneven growth patterns have led to heavier collection workloads in some neighborhoods, making the weekly pickup days scheduled 30 years ago not as efficient as they once were.”

Salt Lake City analyzes data and uses technology to map the most efficient driving routes in an area. By minimizing travel distance, time, and fuel consumption, the City maximizes container pickups per trip. This ensures waste and recycling crews collect from each household efficiently, reducing environmental impact.

Workload factors include volume of material collected, average number of containers set out each day, geography, road configurations, and traffic patterns. More details and an interactive collection schedule map are available at www.slc.gov/pickup.
