WHEREAS, assistive technology devices and services allow Utahns with disabilities and older adults the opportunity to live independently and to participate more fully in their lives, families and communities; and
WHEREAS, assistive technology is any item, piece of equipment, or product, whether acquired commercially, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities or older adults; and
WHEREAS, assistive technology devices and services are defined as any service that directly assists an individual in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device; and
WHEREAS, the Utah Assistive Technology Program, Institute for Disability Research, Policy, & Practice, and Utah State University, amongst others, provide services that include the reutilization of assistive technology devices; short-term loans of assistive technology devices; demonstration of devices to inform decision making; and financing activities to help individuals purchase or obtain assistive technology through a variety of initiatives; and
WHEREAS, the Utah Assistive Technology Program has provided assistive technology equipment, expert guidance, and support services to Salt Lake City residents for 11 years; and
WHEREAS, in the year 2023 alone, the Utah Assistive Technology SLC lab has touched the lives of 293 individuals with disabilities, providing them with assistive technology to enhance their quality of life; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City is grateful for the partnership with the Utah Assistive Technology Program in providing assistive technology equipment to ensure access to Salt Lake City events; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City recognizes the availability of assistive technology in the workplace promotes economic self-sufficiency, enhances work participation, and is critical to the employment of people with disabilities and older adults; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erin Mendenhall, Mayor of Salt Lake City, proclaim April 17, 2024, as:
