Asphalt maintenance
Salt Lake City maintains more than 1,900 lane miles of roads. To keep streets in good condition, crews fill potholes, seal cracks, and resurface pavement as needed. Each year, the Streets and Engineering Divisions review road conditions to decide what type of work is needed.
The Pavement Management Team inspects roads in person and through surveys to find the most effective and cost-efficient way to maintain them.
If you notice a road issue, report it through the mySLC app or call the Streets Division at 801-535-2345.
Filling potholes
Salt Lake City fills about 40,000 potholes each year and works to repair them as quickly as possible.
When you submit a request, please include:
- The address or location of the pothole
- Your email address for updates
All requests are reviewed by the Streets Division’s Asphalt Team. Depending on the situation, repairs may take a few days to a few weeks, and we’ll keep you updated along the way.
Note: The City does not have dedicated funding for alleyway maintenance. Potholes in alleys are handled based on severity and available funds. While we can’t guarantee major repairs, we will do what we can to keep alleys safe and usable.
New techniques and technologies
In warmer months, crews use hot asphalt to fill potholes, which makes a stronger, longer-lasting patch. In winter, Streets uses a cold mix, but it doesn’t hold up as well. That’s why permanent pothole repairs are usually done in warmer weather.
Streets is also using new tools and techniques, like saw-cutting and digging out damaged sections of road, to make repairs more durable. These improvements help give Salt Lake City residents smoother, safer streets.
Concrete road maintenance
Each year, the Streets Division maintains about 11 miles of concrete roads. This includes sealing cracks between concrete slabs and replacing damaged sections, when needed. If you have questions, email Mitch Hansen at Mitch.Hansen@slc.gov.
Residents and businesses near the project will be notified one week before work starts, with another reminder the day before. “No Parking” signs will also be posted the day before. Vehicles left in the work zone will be towed to the nearest street, and the Salt Lake City Police Department will be informed where they were moved.
