Parking politely in residential areas

People walking on the sidewalk next to cars parked in the street.

Residential neighborhoods are shared spaces — whether you’re visiting friends, attending a nearby event, or just looking for a place to park. Salt Lake City asks everyone to park politely to help keep streets safe, accessible, and pleasant for all.

Taking a few extra moments to park correctly not only shows respect for our neighbors, but also helps you avoid parking tickets or towing.

Residential parking rules

Be a good neighbor by following these rules when parking in residential areas:

  • Park in the same direction as traffic.
  • Read and follow all posted signs carefully.
  • Park at least 20 feet from crosswalks at intersections.
  • Park at least 30 feet from stop signs.
  • Don’t park in bus stops.
  • Park at least five feet away from driveways.
    • If there’s a mailbox near the driveway, leave 10 feet of space.
  • Park at least five feet away from fire hydrants on either side — even if there’s no red curb or sign.
  • Don’t park more than 12 inches from the curb.
    • Be mindful of trash and recycling bins on collection days so you don’t block them.
    • Leaving too much space between your car and the curb can make it harder for emergency vehicles to pass.
  • Don’t park on or block sidewalks.
