Learning About Trees with Rowland Hall Fifth Graders
Earlier this year, Urban Forestry staff gave an engaging presentation about the importance of trees to Rowland Hall’s fifth-grade classes. The collaboration was initiated by Kiara Rivera, a dedicated teacher at the school who wanted her students to learn more about the role trees play in creating healthy, sustainable communities.
During the presentation, Urban Forestry staff discussed a wide range of topics—including how trees improve air quality, provide shade, and support wildlife habitats. Students were encouraged to think about the trees in their own neighborhoods and how those trees contribute to the quality of life in their city.
After the presentation, the fifth graders were challenged to apply what they had learned in a creative way. The classes were assigned to design informative and visually engaging infographics that showcased the importance of trees.
The students rose to the challenge buy including persuasive messages to highlight how trees benefit both people and the planet. Their infographics touched on topics such as environmental benefits, economic benefits, and the beauty trees bring to urban spaces.

Through this collaboration, students not only learned scientific facts about trees but also developed a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship. By creating infographics, they practiced research and communication skills. This experience highlights how vital it is for younger generations to care about the environment. When students connect classroom learning to real-world environmental issues, they begin to see that they can make a difference, no matter their age. Urban Forestry staff were inspired by the students’ creativity and enthusiasm.
