Looking for a Third Space? Salt Lake City Public Lands are the Perfect Pick

What is a third space?

A “third space” is a place where you can forget all your worries, to-dos, and just relax. These spaces are physical places that aren’t your home or your workplace– our typical first two places. These can be your neighborhood park, a public library, or any other place that invites you to take a break from your daily routine.

Why are third spaces so important?

Community third spaces allow people to have fun together, make new friends, or connect with loved ones. Being physically away from home or work encourages you to explore new spaces and rediscover yourself. Getting outside of your comfort zone and taking advantage of spaces that encourage human interaction can help relieve stress and anxiety.

Parks & Public Lands = The perfect third space

Outdoor spaces fill our need for third spaces in many ways. They are free, great for physical and emotional health, and they bring communities together. Every Salt Lake City public park, trail, and natural area is completely free to visit. This makes them inclusive spaces for people of all backgrounds to relax and meet new people in a friendly environment.

PUBLIC LANDS PRO TIP:

Being outside has many health benefits, including improving circulation, heart health, and immunity. Outdoor group activities like recreational sports, hiking, and more help create memories and connect you to your community.

How to make public lands a third space

Attend a free event! Public Lands’ Community Events are a great way to meet people and get outdoors. Events range from outdoor movie nights and concerts to fun events centered around your kids or your pups! Check out all our upcoming events on the Public Lands events calendar.

Explore your parks and trails! Most Salt Lake City residents live within a ½ mile radius or a 10-minute walk from their nearest public park. Make sure to check out a green space near you sometime soon. The city’s trails offer excellent access to nature, so don’t be afraid to get out there and take a hike. Find a park or a trail to explore here.

Exploring Salt Lake City’s public lands lets you discover your very own third space and encourages you to relax and get outdoors. Bring a friend (or a few) and make it a community activity. Whether you want to spend time with yourself or with others, getting out into our public spaces helps us reconnect with life outside of home and work. See you in a park or on a trail soon SLC!
