Alternate Means and Methods Application
The Alternate Means and Methods application allows applicants to request a modification or interpretation of Building or Fire Code requirements when standard compliance presents practical difficulty.
Overview
Applicants may submit a request to the Building Official for approval of an alternative design, material, or method that differs from prescriptive code requirements. The request must demonstrate that the proposed solution meets the intent of the code.
When to Use This Application
- When a code requirement creates an extreme or impractical condition for a project
- When proposing an alternate design, material, or construction method
- When requesting interpretation of a specific code section
Application Requirements
- Identify the specific code section being modified or interpreted
- Describe the code requirement and why it presents difficulty
- Provide a detailed explanation of the proposed alternative
- Demonstrate how the proposal meets the intent of the code
- Include supporting documentation or attachments as needed
Approval Process
- The Building Official reviews the request
- The request may be approved, approved with conditions, or denied
- Fire Marshal review may be required depending on scope
Applicant Agreement
By submitting this application, the applicant agrees to comply with all conditions imposed by Building Services if the request is approved.
Failure to comply with imposed conditions may result in:
- Revocation of the permit
- Loss of rights to continue construction or occupancy
- Enforcement actions and associated costs
Important Note
Approval of an alternate means or method does not waive code compliance. The proposed alternative must still meet the intent of the applicable codes and may include additional conditions.
