Council Sets Public Hearing Dates for Utility Impact Fee Updates

Residents and stakeholders will have multiple opportunities this fall to comment on the proposed updates to utility Impact Fees. The first public hearing will be on Tues., Sept. 22 at 7:00 p.m., in-person only at the Utah State Fairpark. The second public hearing will be on Tues., Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m. in-person at the City and County building or online.

Supporting Housing

The Council addressed the following items as part of their efforts to support affordable and diverse housing across the city:

• A follow-up briefing on Expanding Housing Options, a program meant to ease the housing shortage primarily through small, infill housing that is compatible with existing neighborhoods while still being attainable. The Planning Division noted increased public engagement efforts since the last briefing in February. The Council is looking into additional public engagement efforts on this topic after the Planning Commission takes action.
• Approved a one-year extension of a zoning change for the Hoyt Place, a community of single-family homes on the Westside. The extension would give the property owner more time to address infrastructure and fire code requirements. 

Supporting Sustainability

The Council was briefed on the following items during the work session related to sustainability and preservation:

• A proposal to transfer around 900 acres of surplus wetland property to the Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR) with a conservation easement. The land was originally acquired for the mitigation of wetland impacts caused by the west runway expansion at the Salt Lake City International Airport in the 1990s. The transfer would save the Airport an estimated $70,000 annually.
• Recommendations on public-facing electric vehicle (EV) charging station infrastructure, including a proposal to maintain free EV charging at the Airport, to support the City’s sustainability goals for the unique users that visit and park at the Airport.

The Council’s work session begins at 2 p.m. and the formal meeting begins at 7 p.m., ending upon the conclusion of items listed on the agenda.
