Council Approves $50,000 in Emergency Assistance for Poplar Grove Families Affected by Flooding

As part of the first budget amendment of the fiscal year, the Council approved funding to help impacted residents cover short-term needs while insurance claims and an evaluation move forward after a main water break.

The budget amendment also includes:

  • Crosswalks to increase safety along school routes.
  • Improvements to the Fleet Block and 9 Line.
  • A pump track, adaptive pump track and skate park at Glendale Park.
  • Support for the Community Health Access Team Social Workers.
  • Public awareness campaigns to gain resident feedback on housing policies.

Public Utilities Impact Fee Updates

The Council accepted public comment and approved updated impact fees to support the water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure adjustments needed as Salt Lake City grows. The fees had not been updated since 1999 and will help ensure new development contributes to the cost of expanding the systems it relies on. Because they apply to new development, most existing residents will not see a direct impact.

Public Hearings on Land Use, Wetland Transfer and More

The Council accepted public comment on eight proposals in total, including a proposed sale of approximately 900 acres of surplus wetland property to the Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR) with a conservation easement. The Council ultimately cannot approve or reject this sale, as that is the Mayor’s role, but it can facilitate public input and decide whether to waive fees for a conservation easement.

“I really appreciate all the input and I look forward to more thoughtful conversations,” said Council Member Dan Dugan. “We all want to preserve this property because we love Salt Lake City. If we don’t do this right, we’re doing a disservice to ourselves, our kids, and our grandchildren.”

Community Engagement Updates

The Council joined Mayor Mendenhall to recognize October as Italian-American Heritage Month in Salt Lake City.

Nine people pose in a city council chamber with flags as one person holds a ceremonial resolution recognizing Italian American Heritage Month.
