In 2017 a road network study found that more than 60% of Salt Lake City’s roads were in poor condition because of a lack of funding following the 2008 recession. To address this and other critical issues, voters approved the Funding Our Future bond in 2018.

Since then, the city has made notable improvements, including:
- Hiring 19 new street crew members.
- Performing preventive maintenance to stop roads from getting worse.
- Allocating special funds for the most damaged roads.
- Upgrading over 20% of streets to good or fair condition.
- Completing more than 65 major road reconstruction projects.
The city has also improved safety features, such as crosswalks and bike lanes, to help everyone move around without a car.
