City Business 101: Civil Enforcement

Hello, District 6!

This month, I’d like to discuss code enforcement. Our city’s Civil Enforcement Division enforces local laws and regulations that address issues like property maintenance, zoning violations, and safety hazards. Officers investigate reported violations to determine whether they violate city code and require a resolution.

Unpermitted construction, unsightly/unsafe property, illegal parking, or inoperable vehicles fall under what is enforceable. Things like private disputes, interior issues or tenant-landlord problems are not enforceable.

What are some commonly overlooked codes and regulations? Zoning violations can go unnoticed, when people use their property in ways that require proper permits. Building permits can be overlooked but you may need them to make certain changes or additions to your property, even small ones like a fence or deck. Animal regulations like leash laws and noise ordinances are also important to be wary of.
