This month, I’d like to provide an overview of how City departments work together and make decisions on how to repair high-demand roadways.
Before construction or repairs begin on a street, maintenance workers study its condition using what’s called the Overall Conditions Index (OCI). The OCI provides a number between zero to 100, with zero being close to gravel and 100 being a brand-new asphalt surface. The Streets Division can mitigate further damage to any roadway assessed above 40 OCI. Any value below requires complete reconstruction through the Engineering Department.
The Funding our Future bond has helped with road construction efforts, but currently, about 28% of city roads fall below 40 OCI. A new street OCI survey is expected to be complete by November which will give a better estimate of how much reconstruction needs to be done.
I appreciate your patience as crews work to complete road projects. If you see a pothole or want to report conditions on your street, submit a request at mySLC.gov or on the mySLC Mobile app.
