City Business 101: Snow Removal

This month, as the weather starts to get colder, I’d like to discuss Salt Lake City’s snow removal process. City crews work to keep everyone safe when snow falls in our neighborhoods, plowing hundreds of miles of city streets, bike lanes, and more.

Some city streets get plowed before others. The highest priority streets are emergency routes like hospitals and main roads, followed by busy streets or roads to provide access to schools or commercial areas. Neighborhood and residential roads get cleared last. State roads are maintained by UDOT.

It’s important to remember that homeowners are responsible for clearing sidewalks near their homes.

Please, be cautious and courteous while driving when crews operate plow trucks:

  • Stay back at least 200 feet
  • Do not try to pass or cut a plow truck off
  • If you can’t see the plow trucks mirrors, the driver can’t see you.
