Separation of Powers

In Salt Lake City, the Mayor and the City Council are separate branches of the government with equal power. The Mayor is the chief executive, while the City Council is the legislative body that helps decide where to focus resources by adopting annual budgets and ordinances. The City Council sets the policy direction for the city by voting on items from the Mayor’s administration and directing requests to the correct City departments.
