Come and learn how to properly repair historic masonry at Salt Lake City’s, Allen Park! Salt Lake City’s Planning Division and Department of Public Lands are excited to announce a 3-day masonry repair workshop! Featuring nationally renowned historic preservation expert, Bob Yapp.

Need to know

This engaging, hands-on masonry workshop offers participants practical experience in removing deteriorated mortar and applying proper repointing techniques for historic masonry.

The 3-Day Masonry Workshop will include:

  • In-depth guidance on how to assess the condition of historic masonry and identify appropriate interventions.
  • Emphasis will be placed on understanding the underlying causes of masonry deterioration and failure, along with strategies for prevention.
  • Focus on rehabilitating the stone foundation of the Roost.

Please consider using public transportation or biking. There is limited on-street parking available.

3-Day Masonry Workshop
$75 
registration fee for city employees**
$150 registration fee for general public

Commitment to attend all three days is required upon registration.
** City spots are limited, please reach out to Amy Reid at Amy.Reid@slc.gov prior to registering.

The price includes all three workshop days (July 8, July 9 and July 10). Morning coffee and lunch will be provided.

Bring Your Own PPE: To keep costs low, attendees are required to bring their own safety glasses, work gloves and an N95 mask.

About the Roost

Built into the hillside, this two-story structure with rubble stone foundation and rustic log siding is the oldest structure in Allen Park. The Roost is believed to have been used as a barn and has been on the property since at least 1911.

About Bob Yapp

Bob has dedicated his entire career to community planning, historic preservation, central city revitalization, teaching and woodworking. In 1996, Bob started production of the national, weekly PBS program, About Your House with Bob Yapp. Bob was executive producer, writer and host for this National Trust of Historic Preservation sponsored fifty-two show series. Since leaving PBS in 2001, Bob has dedicated himself to preservation education.
