National Public Lands Day!

Today is National Public Lands Day! The Department of Public Lands is fairly new to the city and we are incredibly proud of the work being done by each of our divisions. We want you all to get to know a little more about us, so let’s introduce you to our teams.

Parks

All of the public parks in the city of Salt Lake are incredibly special places. Parks are an amazing space for community members to gather and for residents to recreate.

There are large regional parks like Liberty and Glendale Parks to smaller more unique hidden gems like Allen Park. There is something out there for everyone! Here is a link to a map that shows all of the public parks in the city.

Trails & Natural Lands

One of the biggest draws to living in Salt Lake is the proximity to trails and natural areas. Hiking and exploring nature is a popular pastime for people living in SLC and our TNL team works hard to keep these spaces maintained and ready for use.

Included in the trails and natural lands of our city is the foothill trail system. Consisting of 6,000 acres of open space, this trail system is robust. We are lucky to explore it daily!

Urban Forestry

Liberty Park Pond

Trees are an important part of every city that help breathe life into neighborhoods and parks. Our Urban Forestry team works hard to plant new trees and ensure the health of already existing trees around the city.

Through the Keep Your Cool program, our Urban Forestry team plants trees in parking strips around the city. This helps beautify neighborhoods and increase the number of trees present in our city.

City Events

Dogs having fun at Yappy Hour community event

The Department of Public Lands hosts a wide variety of events each year at our public parks. These events are FREE to the public and give citizens a place to connect with each other and have fun!

Our Department works hard to provide a variety of events to interest a wide group of people. We host fitness events, community celebrations, concerts, and more. These events provide us with the opportunity to partner with other city departments, local businesses, and organizations.

Keep a look out for our 2026 events calendar, coming this fall.

Cemetery

Salt Lake City Cemetery

The Salt Lake City is a meaningful place to many people. We are proud to manage this space and pride ourselves in keeping it beautiful for visitors and individuals who have been laid to rest there.

Golf

Salt Lake City Golf Course

The Golf division of the Department of Public Lands manages six local courses. These golf courses are very popular among residents for them to practice their skills and play games. Make sure to stop by one of these beautiful courses next time you are looking to play a round!

Everyone on our team works hard to keep these green spaces lovely for you to enjoy and all that we ask is that you respect them in return. Now that you know a little more about The Department of Public Lands, our divisions, and what we do, we hope you get out there and explore!
