New In-Ground Trash Cans for Select SLC Parks and The Jordan River Trail

New In-Ground Trash Cans for Select SLC Parks and The Jordan River Trail

In July 2025, the Salt Lake City Public Lands Department piloted new, in-ground trashcans along the 9 Line Bike Trail. These inaugural cans were just the start. As crews monitored these receptacles over the next two months, they saw that just one of these 12 ft. cans could reduce trash accumulation in public areas so significantly that it wasn’t long before installation began across the city.

These trash cans descend nine feet underground and roughly three feet above ground. They can be found along the Jordan River Trail, West side parks, and along the 9 Line. These in-ground trash cans have a 300-gallon capacity and are periodically emptied and transported to proper waste destinations by crane.

Since July, another half-dozen trash cans have been installed. These installations are a huge win for the health and safety of everyone who utilizes these spaces. As our city continues to grow, trash is an unavoidable reality. However, with these larger-than-life trash cans, we’re able to curb the amount of overflow we’ve seen on the ground and relieve some of the load from our Parks team. These new additions to our parks and urban trails are a win-win for all!
