Salt Lake City has a Mayor/Council form of government. The City Council is the legislative branch and works with the Mayor to serve residents.
The Council sets city policies and approves the annual budget. Each Council Member is elected to a four-year term and represents one of the city's seven districts with similar population sizes.

Council Statement on Lawsuit Related to Proposed ICE Detention Facility
The Salt Lake City Council remains opposed to the proposed ICE mega detention facility. Without the information needed to fully evaluate its negative impacts, the City has determined that legal action is necessary to ensure compliance with applicable federal laws, administrative procedures, and intergovernmental coordination requirements.
