Much needed Sugar House infrastructure improvements to begin in September

August 28, 2023

Construction will begin at two intersections on 2100 South in Sugar House at 1300 East and Highland Drive in September.

Through October, the Highland Drive/2100 South intersection will be reduced to one lane in all directions with limited left turns while crews replace deep underground utilities and reconstruct the intersection as part of the Highland Drive/1100 East project.

Construction to replace a 100-year-old sewer line between 1400 East and Highland Drive will also begin with impacts to the 1300 East/2100 South intersection. Sewer replacement will continue west towards Highland Drive and extend east of 1400 East to Yuma Street later this year through 2024.

“Sugar House streets and utilities are aged and in need of replacement,” said SLC Transportation Project Manager Lynn Jacobs. “We’re improving the area by adding safe and comfortable facilities for all kinds of travel choices on these major routes. We’re coinciding the impacts from these two projects to reduce the overall time that traffic is impacted on 2100 South.”

Anticipated Impacts through October 2023:

2100 South:

o    Reduced to one lane east- and west-bound between 900 East and 1400 East day and night.

1300 East Intersection:

o    Lane restrictions on 2100 South & 1300 East during the day and at night

§  2 left-turn lanes from westbound 2100 South to 1300 East

o    Left turn modifications and/or restrictions at the 1300 East/2100 South intersection.

o     Partial intersection closures at night while crews work through the intersection for up to 4 weeks.

Highland Drive Intersection:

o    1 lane east and westbound on 2100 South

o    Southbound Highland Drive to eastbound left turns maintained, but all others closed.

o    Right turns will be allowed and southbound 1100 East traffic will be maintained through the intersection during the day.

Intermittent business and residential access interruptions.

Salt Lake City has additional projects planned to improve aging infrastructure in Sugar House, many of which were funded by the 2018 voter-approved Funding our Future bond, including:

·         Highland Drive/1100 East; Driggs Ave to Logan Ave

·         2100 South; 700 East to 1300 East

·         1300 East; 2100 South to 3300 South

These projects include multi-use paths, bike lanes, more trees and plantings, and opportunities to make the routes more comfortable for people on the street, while also maintaining vehicle capacity.

Reconstruction of the Highland Drive intersection aligns with the future design for 2100 South from 700 East to 1300 East and means that this intersection will be complete before the remainder of the 2100 South project is constructed in 2024/25.

The Sugar House Community Council and Chamber of Commerce encourage the community to keep supporting your local businesses during and after construction.

“We understand the impacts these construction projects are going to have on the community and businesses and we coordinate frequently with the City to make sure the neighborhood has the most up to date information,” said Sugar House Community Council Chair Landon Clark.

“Please be patient, these upgrades were a long time coming and much needed for the future of Sugar House. Please keep supporting your Sugar House businesses. They are what makes Sugar House great. They will need all of us,” he added.

“It has never been more important to shop local and support your favorite businesses in the area,” said Brandon Hill, Co-Chair of the Sugar House Chamber of Commerce. “We encourage residents and visitors alike to visitshopsugarhouse.org to learn about ways you can support local Sugar House businesses and stay involved with community events.”

Each project has a dedicated public engagement team to assist with comments, questions, or concerns from design through construction. Individual projects also send more detailed construction information weekly. Find information at https://www.slc.gov/mystreet/2020/12/17/sugarhouse/
