Dolores Huerta Avenue
The Council approved renaming the city-owned portion of 500 South between State Street and 700 East in honor of labor rights activist Dolores Huerta as “Dolores Huerta Boulevard.”
Dolores Huerta spent decades organizing on behalf of farm workers, and her advocacy for fair wages and dignified working conditions has left a lasting mark on labor rights in the United States. This honorary naming would recognize her contributions and their significance to our community.
I hope that current and future children in our city grow up looking to Huerta as a role model — someone who fought tirelessly for a better society and who found the strength to speak her truth, even in the face of injustice,” said Council Chair Alejandro Puy. “She is a symbol of the courage we need more of: the courage to challenge wrongdoing, to uplift others, and to help build a more equitable world.
Formal Meeting Highlights
The Council held several public hearings during the formal meeting, with most comments focused on the potential amendments to address issues related to camping in public spaces, including parks, sidewalks, plazas, and streets. The Council also heard public comment on nine additional city items, including:
- A request to rezone property at 1750 South Jefferson Street for a multi-family development. The project’s proposed community benefit includes reserving 15% of units as affordable housing for households earning at or below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI).
- An ordinance vacating a portion of Fortune Road from approximately 2040 West Fortune Road to the intersection at Wallace Road.
- A proposal to rezone properties at approximately 346, 350, and 354 South 800 East, for a 109-unit mixed-use building.
Briefings
The Council was briefed on the following items during the work session:
- The Department of Public Utilities and the Metropolitan Water District’s recommended budget for Fiscal Year 2026-27. The City’s Department of Public Utilities manages water, sewer, stormwater, and street lighting systems, including water from Metro Water. The Department proposes rate increases across all services and a rate structure change in the sewer fund. Increases are directly related to critical and aging infrastructure that is required by the federal government, and to keep pace with the increasing cost of supplies and equipment. (Watch)
- A proposal to update Salt Lake City Code to align with a new state law on how the Salt Lake City Department of Airports handles lost and forgotten items. (Watch)
