Salt Lake City’s Public Utilities Department provides clean, safe drinking water to over 360,000 people.

Watershed areas, such as City Creek, Big and Little Cottonwood, and Parleys Canyons, provide nearly 60% of our source water.

Source water” refers to the rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs, springs, and groundwater providing drinking water. It is important to protect this precious resource to ensure everyone has access to clean and affordable drinking water for generations to come.

Here are some ways you can help protect our watershed when recreating:

  • Keep pets at home or in designated areas.
  •  Only use the established restrooms.
  •  Leave No Trace. Take all trash with you or use area trash cans.
  •  Stay on designated trails and out of the water.
