Folsom Trail: Multi-use Pedestrian & Bicycle Path

Folsom Trail: Multi-use Pedestrian & Bicycle Path

Full Project Scope

The Folsom Trail is an off-street, paved walking and bicycling path that connects Westside neighborhoods and the Gateway District of Downtown. Due to previous property issues on the western third of the project, only part of the trail was completed in 2022 (between 500 West and 1000 West). Completing and enhancing the Folsom Trail was identified as a priority in the Reimagine Nature Master Plan (2022). As a result, it is one of the eight projects that will receive funding through the General Obligation Bond, approved in November 2022.

Bond funding is intended to complete the Folsom Trail (connecting it with the Jordan River Parkway Trail) and introduce waterwise landscaping and additional amenities at intersections along the corridor. This project aims to improve east-west connections across the city and provide easier access for those walking and bicycling to public spaces and the Jordan River. These outcomes target air and water quality improvements through better transportation choices and native plant and tree choices that are compatible with our arid climate.

Community Engagement

In April 2020, more than 1,000 Folsom Trail community members prioritized the landscaping improvements and budgets for this project. Using that input, the City created a phased landscaping plan for the Folsom Trail that will be implemented with bond funding. The completion of the trail between 1000 West and the Jordan River will require public and private collaborations and partnerships. Project Status

The first phase of the project, which is currently on-going, focuses on trail design and construction that supports a safe and comfortable walking and bicycling connection for all ages and abilities. Future phases of improvements to the Folsom Corridor will explore options for encouraging redevelopment, expanding the focus on green space, ecological improvements, and water quality.
