Every April 22, Earth Day invites us to reflect on our connection to the natural world and renew our commitment to protecting it. In Salt Lake City, our public lands are at the heart of that connection. They are where we gather, recreate, and recharge, and they depend on all of us to ensure they thrive.
At the Department of Public Lands, Earth Day is both a celebration and a responsibility. It’s a moment to highlight the work happening year-round to care for our shared spaces and to invite our community to be part of that effort.
Protecting What Matters Most

Our teams are dedicated to maintaining and improving the health of Salt Lake City’s landscapes. From restoring native vegetation in the foothill to planting and maintaining trees across our neighborhoods, we are working to build a more resilient and sustainable urban environment.
Key efforts include:
- Expanding the city’s urban tree canopy to improve air quality and reduce heat
- Restoring habitats that support pollinators, birds, and other wildlife
- Designing and maintaining trails that balance recreation with conservation
- Using water-wise landscaping to protect our limited water resources
These efforts not only protect the environment, but they also enhance the quality of life for everyone who calls Salt Lake City home.
Your Role in Stewardship

Earth Day reminds us that caring for public lands is a shared responsibility. Small, everyday actions can make a meaningful difference:
- Pack out trash and follow Be W.I.L.D principles when visiting parks and trails
- Choose waterwise landscaping at home
- Participate in community clean-ups or tree planting events
- Respect wildlife and stay on designated paths in natural areas
Celebrate Earth Day with Us

This Earth Day, we encourage you to step outside and experience the beauty of Salt Lake City’s public lands. Visit a local park, explore a trail, or simply spend time under the shade of a tree.
