Salt Lake City picks up garbage, recycling, and compost on every holiday EXCEPT:
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas and
- New Year’s Day (Jan. 1)
Collection will be delayed one day following those three holidays, for the remainder of that week. The schedule will not change if Christmas and New Year’s day fall on a weekend.
Also, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are not considered holidays by Waste & Recycling! So garbage and recycling collection take place, as normal, on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve when those days fall on weekdays.
If that’s not clear, these examples will help explain.
- Holiday example No. 1: If your regular pickup day is Monday, and Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Monday, your garbage, recycling and compost won’t be picked up until Tuesday those two weeks only.
- Holiday example No. 2: If your regular pickup day is Friday, and Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Monday of that week, your garbage, recycling and compost will picked up on Saturday those two weeks only.
- Holiday example No. 3: If your regular pickup day is Monday, and Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Sunday, your trash, recycling and compost will be picked up on Monday, as usual.
- Holiday example No. 4: If your regular pickup day is Thursday, the city will collect your garbage, recycling and compost on Friday during Thanksgiving week. If your pickup day is Friday, we’ll collect on Saturday Thanksgiving week only.
- Holiday example No. 5: Remember, Waste & Recycling works many days that are taken as holidays by others! So if your regular pickup is on on Labor Day, which falls on a Monday, garbage, recycling and compost will be collected on that Monday, as if it were a normal week. And if your pickup is on Wednesday that week, it will still occur on Wednesday.
