The Program: Gas-powered lawn equipment creates a lot of air pollution! That’s why Salt Lake City is offering incentives for residents to switch to battery-powered lawn mowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, edgers, chainsaws and leaf blowers. You can earn the maximum voucher amount if you recycle a piece of gas-powered equipment (we want them out of the airshed!). But we are also offering smaller vouchers to residents that don’t have gas-powered equipment to recycle. See chart below for the value differences.
Available Equipment & Vouchers

LAWN MOWER
♻ Recycling a gas-powered lawn mower? Get a $299 voucher toward a new electric mower.
🚫Not Recycling? Apply for a $149 voucher toward an electric mower

HANDHELD TOOLS*
♻ Recycling a handheld gas-powered tool? Get a $159 voucher toward new electric handheld tools.
🚫Not Recycling? Get a $79 voucher towards an electric handheld tool.
*Handheld tools include: string trimmers, hedge trimmers, edgers, chainsaws and leaf blowers
Important Notes On Voucher Use:
- You may recycle up two pieces of equipment. For example:
- You can recycle a lawn mower AND handheld tool for a $458 voucher.
- You may also recycle TWO handheld tools for a $318 voucher.
- If you are not recycling any equipment, your household may only receive one voucher (either for an electric mower OR a handheld landscaping tool).
- Your voucher may not fully cover the cost of your new equipment. Your checkout total must exceed the voucher’s value. Be prepared to pay the difference out of pocket, including any applicable sales tax.
- Vouchers can be stacked with any other sales or promotions. If you want to make the most of your voucher, it may help to ask retail staff about any upcoming sales.
- Modifications to submitted applications are not allowed. You must adhere to the vendor and voucher type selected in your submitted application; we are unable to accommodate requests for changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply for this program?
If you live in Salt Lake City and are over 18 years old, you can apply! Check if you live in City boundaries using this interactive map. Keep in mind that we will only accept one application per household.
How will applicants be selected?
Our program has two main goals: first, to reduce gas-powered landscaping equipment in our community and improve air quality, and second, to ensure funding is distributed fairly across the City.
We’re committed to approving as many eligible applications as possible while funds last. To keep things fair, we’ll track funding distribution across all Council Districts and aim for an equal share in each District. While we’ll do our best to issue as many vouchers as we can, we may adjust our selection process if needed to meet funding targets for each District.
How much funding is available?
We have $250,000 in our budget for this program, meaning we can provide equipment to several hundred residents.
Are there limits on what items I can buy with my voucher?
Yes, the following restrictions apply:
- You may only use your voucher to purchase certain pieces of electric landscaping equipment.
- Lawn mower vouchers (recycling or non-recycling) can only be used to purchase an electric lawn mower.
- Handheld tool vouchers (both recycling or non-recycling), can only be used toward the purchase of eligible electric handheld tools (leaf blower, trimmers, or chainsaws).
How will I get my voucher if I'm selected?
If you are recycling gas-powered equipment at Home Depot, you will receive your voucher(s) when dropping off the equipment at the tool rental area. If you are not recycling equipment, you’ll receive your voucher code by e-mail.
If you selected ACE as your supplier, you will receive your discount when you check out. If you are recycling gas-powered equipment, you can only receive the discount after dropping off the equipment at the designated recycling area in your selected store.
Can I buy electric equipment at any store with my voucher?
We are partnering with select Home Depot and ACE Hardware stores for this program. In your application, you will choose your preferred supplier. Voucher codes are unique to each business, so you must purchase the electric equipment from the business you selected in your application. The City will not allow applicants to change their preferred store after the application is submitted.

Do I need to use the entire value of my voucher code?
Yes, the purchase amount must exceed the value of the voucher before sales taxes and fees.
Can I receive a voucher retroactively for equipment I've already purchased?
No, we cannot retroactively issue vouchers. However, you can apply to receive a voucher for an additional piece of equipment.
What should I bring to the store with me?
