Landscaping Equipment Exchange

About the Program:

Gas-powered equipment creates a lot of air pollution! That’s why Salt Lake City offered a voucher program to support our community in switching to electric landscaping tools to help clear the air. Sign up for our newsletter here to stay informed about future opportunities!

This program was for residential use. If you are a landscaping business owner looking to get electric equipment, please apply for the Utah Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) Charge Your Yard Program here. Applications are open now.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will applicants be selected?

We have $100,000 budgeted for this program. If we receive more applications than we have budget for, we will run a lottery to randomly select applicants. When we run the lottery, we will strive to distribute funding equally across all Council Districts.

When can I expect to hear if I've been accepted into the program?

Expect to hear back about your application by November 8th. If you have not received an email by November 8th, we recommend checking in your spam inbox for communication from cleanairslc@slc.gov.

What do I need to know about recycling my equipment?

Program participants must recycle their equipment at the store they selected to purchase equipment from. All equipment recycled must be operational to qualify for the program. Equipment must also be free of gas and residual oil.

Can I buy electric equipment at any store with my voucher?

We are partnering with select Home Depot and ACE Hardware stores for this program (see store addresses below). In your application, you will choose your preferred vendor. You must purchase the electric equipment from the vendor you selected in your application. The City will not allow applicants to change their preferred store after the application is submitted.

What happens if I change my mind about the equipment I want to buy?

Once you submit your application, you cannot change your selected equipment vendor or the equipment type. Please review your choices carefully before applying.

Does my voucher expire?

Yes. Vouchers can be redeemed between November 9 and November 24, 2024. Any vouchers not used by this date will expire and cannot be reissued.

Can someone else redeem my voucher or drop off my gas-powered equipment?

Yes. If you need someone to help you purchase or recycle your equipment, that person must present a signed note from you, your ID, and your selection email.

What should I do if my equipment isn’t working and I need to return or exchange it?

There will be no returns on equipment purchased. Exchanges may be accommodated but would be handled on a case-by-case basis and you may only exchange for another item of eligible equipment. Please contact the store where you purchased the equipment to inquire about their return or exchange policies. The City is not responsible for issues related to faulty equipment.

What if the equipment I want is out of stock when I go to purchase it?

If the equipment you selected is out of stock, please check back with the store later or consider an alternative product within the same category. The City does not control store inventory.
