The Program: Gas-powered lawn equipment creates a lot of air pollution! That’s why Salt Lake City is offering incentives for residents to switch to battery-powered lawn mowers, leaf blowers and string trimmers. You can earn the maximum voucher amount if you recycle a piece of gas-powered equipment (we want them out of the airshed!). But we are also offering smaller vouchers to residents that don’t have gas-powered equipment to recycle. See chart below for the value differences.

Voucher Amounts

EQUIPMENT RECYCLING EQUIPMENTNOT RECYCLING EQUIPMENT
LAWN MOWER $300$150
LEAF BLOWER $100$50
STRING TRIMMER $100$50

*Note: Residents can recycle multiple pieces of equipment and apply for up to $500 total in vouchers (i.e. a resident could recycle a lawn mower, leaf blower and string trimmer and receive $500). However, residents who are not recycling equipment are only eligible for one voucher.

How to Participate

Applicants must be residents of Salt Lake City and be 18-years of age or older. Applicants must provide proof of residency (utility bill, bank statement, mortgage statement, or a major credit card bill) as part of the application. See the chart below to learn more:

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for this program?

Anyone who is a resident of Salt Lake City can apply for the program. Applications will be open for one week. Applicants will be randomly selected using a lottery-based system with the goal of equitably distributing vouchers across the city.

How do I prepare to apply?

This is a lottery-based program, so please take some time to research the type of electric equipment you’d like to purchase before applying. Battery sizes vary on equipment, so consider what kind of battery life you’ll need for your yard work (i.e., if you have a large yard, you’ll want a longer battery life).

Once you know what kind of equipment you want and the vendor you’d like to purchase it from, you’ll be ready to start your application! You’ll have to create a login to our system and have a document showing proof of residency on hand. Keep in mind that we will only accept one application per household.

How much time do I have to redeem my voucher?

If selected, you will have through June 16th to redeem your voucher.

When can I expect to hear if I've been accepted into the program?

You will receive an email from cleanairslc@slcgov.com within 5 business days after the application period closes letting you know if your application was selected. If selected, the email will include additional instructions for recycling equipment and/or redeeming your voucher.

If you don’t receive an e-mail from us during this timeframe, please check your junk and spam inboxes. It may help to add cleanairslc@slcgov.com to your email contacts list in advance.

How will I get my voucher if I'm selected?

If you are recycling gas-powered equipment, you will receive your voucher(s) when dropping off the equipment at the designated recycling area in your selected store. If you are not recycling equipment, you’ll receive your voucher code for your selected supplier by e-mail.

ACE vouchers can be redeemed online or in-store. For in-store orders, please work with a customer service associate when making your purchase.

Home Depot vouchers can only be redeemed in-store.

Can I buy electric equipment at any store with my voucher?

We are partnering with select Home Depot and ACE Hardware stores for this program. In your application, you will choose your preferred vendor. If you are recycling, you will also choose your preferred store. Voucher codes are unique to each vendor, so you must purchase the electric equipment from the vendor you selected in your application. The City will not allow applicants to change their preferred store after the application is submitted.

Ace Hardware (Vouchers may be redeemed in-store or online)

612 East 400 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84102

477 North 300 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84103

Home Depot (Vouchers may ONLY be used in-store)

328 West 2100 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84115

What do I need to know about recycling my equipment?

Program participants can recycle their equipment at the store they selected to purchase equipment from. All equipment recycled must be operational in order to qualify for the program. Equipment must also be free of gas and residual oil.

Do I need to use the entire value of my voucher code?

Yes, the purchase amount must exceed the value of the voucher before sales taxes and fees.

Can I receive a voucher retroactively for equipment I've already purchased?

No, we cannot retroactively issue vouchers. However, you can apply to receive a voucher for an additional piece of equipment.

What should I bring to the store with me?

If you are recycling gas-powered equipment, you will need to bring:

  1. The confirmation email from the City with your application number
  2. A valid government issued ID
  3. Gas-powered equipment to recycle. (Please note that only the equipment included in your application can be recycled)

If you are not recycling, you will need to bring:

  1. The confirmation email from the City with your voucher code
  2. A valid government issued ID

What electric equipment is eligible?

Only battery-powered lawn mower, string trimmers, and leaf blowers are eligible under this Program, corded equipment is not included.
