2026 State Legislative Session
Every year, state legislators meet to propose, discuss, and vote on policies that affect our communities. The 2026 legislative session took place from January 20 to March 6. During this period, legislators introduced new bills, attended committee and public hearings, and voted on bills.
The City’s Role in the Legislative Process
State law governs what cities can and cannot do, meaning decisions made during the session directly shape how the city serves you. During the sessions, the City’s Legislative Affairs Division tracks bills that could affect our services, funding, or local authority. They share city positions with lawmakers as bills move through the process, making sure community and city priorities are heard and represented.

Elected officials represent you at the state level based on where you live. These legislators make decisions that may affect your neighborhood, cost of living, housing availability, and city services you rely on.

City Council Briefings
The Council held briefings on issues that may affect the City during the 2026 Utah State Legislative Session, which ended on March 6. On Tuesday, March 24, the Council is tentatively scheduled to hold a post-session briefing to review the session and its impact on Salt Lake City.
