February 10, 2026 Meeting Recap

Meeting Highlights

Temple Square Street Closure Proposal

The Council was briefed on a request to temporarily close two streets downtown for the Salt Lake Temple’s reopening in 2027. The temporary closures would help with public safety and crowd management during the open house. In exchange for the closures, the Church will pay about $2.3 million in fees consistent with the city’s ordinance.

The Council will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, March 10, at 7 p.m. to gather public feedback.

Long Description:

The image is an aerial view of an urban area centering around the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple Square are which will be marked as temporarily closed. The temple is located near the middle-right of the image, surrounded by roads and buildings. The roads around the temple include North Temple, South Temple, West Temple, and 200 West. The streets are marked with two different colored lines to indicate closures: red for exclusive use closure with fencing, and yellow for traffic closure with traffic control barricades. North Temple and South Temple are highlighted in red, indicating exclusive use closures, while West Temple and 200 North have yellow markings for traffic closure. The area is densely built-up, with a mix of greenery and urban landscape.

Community Reinvestment Agency (CRA) Meeting Highlights

The Council, acting as the CRA, discussed the following items:

  • An update on the Tenant Wealth Building Partnership with the Perpetual Housing Fund’s first affordable housing project, Arbor 515. The project is the city’s first large-scale office-to-housing conversion and one of the first in the nation to incorporate a renter wealth-building model. (Watch)
  • The USA Climbing project at the former Salt Lake Mattress Company building, and the need for major structural work. The costs have exceeded the $6 million that the CRA previously committed. USA Climbing proposed rebuilding the structure with the historic brick, which would cost an additional $250,000. The Board requested a report on options for moving forward and will discuss the request at a future meeting. (Watch
  • Adding CRA funds for proposed safety and community upgrades to Jefferson Park, including a wet meadow, lighting, seating and signage. (Watch)
