Public Invited to Review, Weigh in on Salt Lake City’s Upcoming Annual Budget
The City Council invites everyone who lives, works, and plays in Salt Lake City to participate in the budget process and public hearings throughout May and June.
SALT LAKE CITY, May 12, 2026 – The Salt Lake City Council has begun reviewing Mayor Erin Mendenhall’s recommended Fiscal Year 2026-27 (FY27) budget. The public’s participation is crucial as Council Members consider top city priorities and allocate funding accordingly.
This year, constituents can take a quick online survey to share their budget priorities with Council Members. The Council also accepts public comments 24/7 via email ([email protected]), voice message (801-535-7654) or through an online form submission.
The Council’s budget process runs from May through June and may extend into August to provide the public more time to review any potential tax increases related to the City budget. The process includes:
- Department budget briefings held during work sessions in May and June are open to the public to listen either in-person or online.
- Public hearings scheduled on Tues., May 19 and Tues., June 2 at 7 p.m., with City staff available an hour before each hearing to answer questions about the proposed budget. Members of the public may register to speak to the Council for up to two minutes, either in person or via Zoom.
- An August Truth in Taxation public hearing may be held if the Council authorizes a tax increase and County Auditor tax valuation notices in July.
“While we know not everyone can attend a meeting in person, the City budget impacts all our residents, visitors and stakeholders. So, we’re offering multiple ways to share your thoughts — whether that’s at a public hearing, a survey, an online comment, email or a phone call” said Council Chair Alejandro “Ale” Puy. “The more we hear from residents, the better decisions we can make for Salt Lake City and our future.”
