Salt Lake City Council Hears Resident Input, Adopts Final Property Tax Rate and FY27 Budget

The adopted budget supports essential City services while addressing rising costs and long-term financial needs.

SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 11, 2026 – The Salt Lake City Council finalized the adoption of the City’s Fiscal Year 2026-27 (FY27) budget and approved the final property tax rate following a public Truth in Taxation hearing. The meeting gave community members a formal opportunity to speak before the Council adopted the final budget of $2.1 billion .

“The lengthy discussions this year on the budget were not easy, trying to balance the budget with less revenue and increasing costs,” said Council Chair Alejandro “Ale” Puy. “The impact on all of our neighbors is heavy and I don’t think any of us took this lightly.”

The City proposed the property tax increase to help keep pace with rising costs and maintain essential City services, including public safety, parks, streets, infrastructure and other day-to-day services residents rely on.

Before proposing the increase, the City identified $13.2 million in savings and efficiencies to reduce costs and help limit the increase.

After the truth in taxation hearing, the Council also finalized the FY27 budget, which includes funding for public safety, transit, housing stability and the Capital Improvement Program (CIP). The Council will allocate funds to CIP proposals later this month.
