SLCMAD Property Tax Increase

The Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District (SLCMAD) plans to increase property taxes for Salt Lake City residents in 2025. The increase aims to cover rising daily operations costs due to inflation, build new facilities, and purchase a helicopter for mosquito treatment.

SLCMAD manages mosquito control for public health and safety in Salt Lake City.

The SLCMAD Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing and a potential vote on the proposed tax increase on Dec. 19, 2024, at 6 p.m. The meeting will take place at the district facilities located at 2215 North 2200 West. If approved by the board, the increase will take effect in Nov. 2025.

The Council’s Role

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, the City Council received a briefing on SLCMAD’s proposal and held a public hearing to gather input, as required by state law.

While the City Council reviewed the proposal, the ultimate decision-making authority lies with the SLCMAD Board of Trustees. The board and SLCMAD staff are responsible for the District’s operational and financial management. The Council’s role in the SLCMAD includes:

  • Appointing members of the District’s Board.
  • Ensuring transparency.
  • Facilitating public input.
  • Adhering to state law requirements, which mandate a public hearing for such proposals.
