Council Statement on Unauthorized Damage to Fifth Ward Meetinghouse

SALT LAKE CITY, April 2, 2024 – We’re deeply saddened by the unauthorized damage to the Fifth Ward Meetinghouse, a cherished historic landmark. We support a thorough investigation into the incident and will bolster efforts to protect our city’s historic sites.

Today, we will discuss a proposal to strengthen enforcement on unauthorized work to further safeguard our historic sites and establish additional remedies for unauthorized alterations or demolitions.

We are grateful to the public for reporting the incident and to City staff who quickly responded, preventing further damage.
