Salt Lake City Brings Council Meeting to the Westside
Residents gathered at the Sorenson Center to participate in the offsite council meeting and provide public comment.
SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 17, 2024 – The Salt Lake City Council hosted its annual offsite meeting at the Sorenson Unity Center, continuing its efforts to engage Westside residents and stakeholders. Participants shared their thoughts, concerns and ideas with Council Members in the welcoming and accessible community center.
“This is just one of many ways we prioritize accessibility and transparency while connecting to our Westside neighbors,” said Council Chair Victoria Petro. “These meetings allow us to bring City Hall directly to the community so every resident can share their input and have the opportunity to get involved on the local level.”
The Council approved a resolution reaffirming the City’s commitment to supporting the health of the Great Salt Lake. Acknowledging the pressing threats posed by water diversions, climate change, and toxic dust exposure, the Council noted their support for implementing the Great Salt Lake Strategic Plan. Other agenda items included updates on Glendale Regional Park construction, the Emerald Ribbon Action Plan and the Reconnecting Communities Grant awarded to the City in 2022 to address east-west transportation connectivity, and efforts to maintain the Great Salt Lake’s water levels.
The meeting featured dinner from Rancho Market and entertainment by Indian cultural dance group ChitraKaavya Dance. Community well-being nonprofit Jayhawks House Collaborative (JHC) led the meeting’s opening ceremony with West High School junior, Pacific Islander Student Association member, and JHC mentee, Kayuh leading the pledge of allegiance.
All residents are welcome to participate in Salt Lake City Council meetings throughout the rest of the year, whether in person at the Salt Lake City & County Building or virtually through Zoom. These meetings, held most Tuesdays at 7 p.m., provide an important opportunity for constituents to engage with the Council, share their perspectives, and stay informed about decisions that directly impact Salt Lake City’s future.
