Salt Lake City Council Begins Transformative Process to Revitalize Downtown and Welcome New Major League Team

SALT LAKE CITY, April 18, 2024 – The Salt Lake City Council released the below statement regarding a National Hockey League franchise in Salt Lake City.

“We share in the incredible excitement that SLC will soon be the proud home of a brand-new National Hockey League franchise! This marks a significant milestone in our City’s ongoing growth and development. As we prepare to welcome the team and its staff, our City’s vision extends beyond the ice rink and our work is far from over.

While bringing more top-tier sports entertainment to Utah is thrilling, we remain committed to revitalizing our capital city’s downtown in a way that will enhance the quality of life for Salt Lakers. We envision a downtown that is accessible, inspires connection, and attracts residents and visitors of all kinds to its vibrant urban spaces.

We also recognize Japantown’s historical and cultural significance and advocate for its thoughtful integration into this revitalization project, ensuring it remains an integral part of Downtown.

While the details of the development are not yet finalized, this news gears up our ongoing discussions about the Capital City Revitalization Zone—where the team will play. We invite all community members to tune into our public discussions and also reach out and engage with us—your input is crucial as we shape a future reflective our diverse community and shared values.

We look forward to the journey ahead as we work together to build a more connected, dynamic, and culturally rich City.”
