What’s Next

Council Vote

On Tuesday, March 24 at 7 p.m., the Council will consider adopting the proposal. You can still share your thoughts at any time by emailing [email protected], calling 801-535-7654, or submitting your comments online

The Proposal

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host an open house to celebrate the reopening of the renovated Salt Lake Temple. The event will run from April to October 2027 and is expected to attract millions of visitors.

To support the event, the Church is asking for temporary street closures near the Temple. The Church would pay about $2.3 million in fees for permits, parking meters, and street use.

City staff have identified that the closures would:

  • Help manage large crowds.
  • Reduce traffic congestion.
  • Allow for safety features like barricades, emergency access, and signs.

Impacted Streets

The following streets would be affected from March to October 2027. Closures would begin in March to allow for infrastructure setup and safety preparations.

Streets Fully Closed

  • North Temple from Main Street to West Temple,
  • West Temple from North Temple to South Temple

Partial Lane Closures

  • South Temple from Main Street to West Temple, one westbound lane
  • North Temple from 200 West to West Temple, all eastbound lanes
  • West Temple from 200 North to North Temple, one northbound lane

Council Discussions

March 10

At the Community Reinvestment Agency (CRA) meeting, the Council, acting as the CRA board, took a straw poll to indicate support for funding new streetlights and decorative lighting on Main Street from 400 South to South Temple. These upgrades are meant to get the area ready for the Temple Reopening Open House Celebration.

Later that day, the Council held a public hearing about the proposed street closures. People shared both support and concerns. Supporters said the event would bring visitors, boost the economy, showcase the City and prepare the city for the 2034 Winter Olympics. Others were worried about how the closures might affect residents, businesses, and access to important services. Several speakers asked the city to keep key routes open, protect residential parking, and ensure people walking and biking can get through. Many also emphasized the need for clear communication and safety plans.

Downtown Alliance updated the Council on the planned support for the 2027 Salt Lake Temple Square Open House. They discussed Downtown Alliance’s plans, opportunities to boost the local economy, ways to attract visitor spending, transportation and parking options, and a recent review of Main Street conditions.

Feb. 10

City Staff presented the Council with an overview of the request to temporarily close some streets downtown for the Temple’s reopening in 2027. They discussed concerns about traffic congestion, student and worker commutes, neighborhood parking, and making sure pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders can move safely and easily. Council Members also emphasized the need for clear communication, coordination, and reducing impacts on residents and businesses during this major event.
