Introduction
The Council is reviewing a proposal from Mayor Mendenhall and her Administration to prohibit distribution centers, package delivery facilities, warehouses, and wholesale distribution centers on a 765-acre property at approximately 6780 W North Temple. The property is the site of a former landfill that operated from 1959 to 1979.
The Northwest Quadrant Master Plan envisions this area as a gateway to the city with taller buildings, offices, and lodging spaces. The intent of the proposal is to avoid the concentration of a single type of land use and to allow for diverse uses as outlined in the Northwest Quadrant Master Plan. Much of the area near this location is already devoted to warehousing and distribution centers. While these uses are essential to the economy and benefit many Salt Lakers, they can also contribute to noise, poor air quality, and traffic.
The proposal would also align city code with a new state law stating that “contaminated land may not be used for a distribution center” within the Inland Port jurisdictional area.
