FY27 Rate Information

Waste & Recycling Proposed Rate Changes

Salt Lake City is dedicated to providing convenient, accessible, and outstanding waste collection services for residents and customers.

Every week, we collect refuse from 42,000 locations – primarily single-family homes, duplexes, and triplexes but also small businesses and some mid-sized, multi-family properties.

Salt Lake City waste collection subscribers receive more than just weekly curbside collection of garbage, recycling, and compost carts. They also get curbside holiday tree collection, two annual bulk waste collections through Call 2 Haul, extra compost containers to assist with leaf cleanup and other green waste projects, and access to free drop-off glass recycling dumpsters. Curbside glass service is available at an extra charge to those who subscribe.

We are committed to maintaining fiscal integrity and promoting sustainable waste diversion through our services and programs.

Crews collected 66,075 tons of total material in 2025 and 36.5% of the residential waste stream was diverted from the landfill through recycling and composting including:

  • 1,406 tons of glass recycled through curbside pick-up and drop-off dumpsters
  • 9,266 tons recycled
  • 14,855 tons composted

The City is proposing a garbage collection rate increase of 9% across all three garbage container sizes in 2026 to pay for increased operational costs and plan for capital needs. The city is also proposing a 2.4% rate increase for its curbside glass recycling service (see rate changes listed in table below.) These costs, which allow us to collect garbage, recycling and compost from roughly 42,000 homes each week, rise every year due to inflation.

This rate increase will also help us to maintain a minimum operating reserve which will allow the City to pick up trash or support larger clean-up events in the case of an emergency.

This increase, along with several other modest increases over the past five years, was needed to catch up after the City did not raise garbage fees from 2014 through 2021.

The rate increases have been carried out at the same time as cost-cutting measures have been implemented, such as the pickup day realignment in 2025, which improved operational efficiency.

Get bill assistance

Do you need bill assistance? Customers who qualify for the Salt Lake County Tax Abatement Program are eligible for a reduction in their water, garbage and storm water charges.

Can I lower my bill?

Yes. Waste & Recycling incentivizes customers to recycle and compost more, and throw away less. We offer reduced rates for using a smaller garbage cart. The standard size is 90, but we offer less expensive, 60- and 40-gallon sizes.
