Livable Streets Zone 5 (Ballpark)

Livable Streets Zone 5

Ballpark

We’re hosting a public design review, Wednesday, January 10th at Whittier Elementary from 6 to 7 PM. Your feedback on the initial design concept will help us finalize the neighborhood traffic calming plan in Zone 5. Can’t make the meeting? Take the Livable Streets survey.

Project Overview

In 2023, the Livable Streets team will begin engagement around implementation of traffic calming in zone 5 of the Livable Streets program. Our goal is to improve the safety, livability, and attractiveness of the streets in the Ballpark neighborhood.

Neighborhood Meetings

We are holding public meetings to gather input from the neighborhood on how to best address the traffic safety issues in the area. The following are past meetings in chronological order starting at the most recent.

Neighborhood Meeting - November 16th, 2023

Thursday, November 16th, 2023 at Whittier Elementary

Feedback was provided by the meeting attendees and some trends and common issues were highlighted. Below is a summary of the key takeaways:

  • Traffic speeds on Major Street are excessive and dangerous. Narrowing Major Street from Harrison to Cleveland Avenues could help address this issue.
  • High speed cut-through traffic from West Temple to Main Street happens on Merrimac, Andrew, and Van Buren Avenues. Bulb-outs were suggested to address the high speed turns off of Main Street and West Temple.
  • A traffic circle or mini-roundabout at the intersection of Merrimac Avenue and Richards Street.
  • Crossing improvements (marked crosswalks, RRFBs, pedestrian refuge islands) were a top subject for discussion in the zone. Improved crossings could help with connectivity across the zone.

Virtual Open House - December 6th, 2023

Wednesday, December 6th, 2023

No community members made it to the meeting. No feedback was collected.
